The Connecticut Dog Federation opposes any law which states that a dog is dangerous based on its breed or appearance. Physical features such as size, shape of head or muzzle, in addition to individual incidents, cannot predict dog behavior when dogs have bitten.
Specifying specific breeds as dangerous is discriminatory, unfair and stigmatizes these breeds and their owners.
Breed specific legislation implies that breeds not included are not dangerous and thus safe to own. This is far from the truth.
The Connecticut Dog Federation supports the adoption and enforcement of laws controlling vicious dogs that are nondiscriminatory and only addresses individual dogs what have been proven dangerous by their individual actions.
The Connecticut Dog Federation supports laws that deal with the behavior of dangerous individual dogs and a uniform enforcement of these laws
OUR REASONS:
Legislative bodies are attempting to pass more breed specific dog laws.
Legislative bodies are attempting to pass stronger breed specific dog laws.
Naming breeds as dangerous leads to the addition of more "dangerous" breeds as
individual incidents occur. Breed specific legislation does not address the real issue,
which is that pet owners and the general public must be educated.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The Connecticut Dog Federation encourages dog owners to work with their local elected officials to enact laws which cover individual cases of dangerous dogs and enforcement of these laws.
